What Pocket Broker Is and How It Works
What the platform is
It is a platform for trading short-term contracts on financial assets, created in 2017 and operated out of Costa Rica. The official name is Pocket Option; Pocket Broker is a nickname.
Before anything practical, a clean definition. Pocket Option is not a bank, it is not a stock broker and it is not a fixed-income investment app. It is an environment where contracts of a set duration are traded on the price movement of assets — what the sector calls fixed time — alongside contract-for-difference instruments.
Fixed-time contracts, in one sentence
Each trade has its period, amount and outcome defined before it starts. You do not buy the asset: you take a position on the direction of its price up to a specific time. When the clock runs out, the contract closes by itself and the result comes out. There is no forgotten position in a portfolio, and there is also no possibility of waiting a bit longer to see whether the price comes back.
That is the underlying difference from buying a share. With a purchase, time works for you or against you indefinitely. Here time is part of the contract, and the period chosen weighs as much as the direction chosen.
What the platform itself says it offers
The official pages describe trading in more than 100 global assets and name five families: forex, cryptocurrencies, shares, commodities and indices. The Android app listing, published under the package com.pocketoption.broker and under the developer Pocket Investments S.R.L., adds a rechargeable demo account with virtual money and interface localisation in 15 languages.
| What it is | What it is not |
|---|---|
| A platform for short-term contracts on asset prices | A broker registered with a named regulator |
| Access by browser, Android app, direct APK and a Telegram bot | A product with a confirmed official listing on the Apple App Store |
| A free demo environment with virtual money | A simulator with no consequence once the account is real |
| A company with a declared address in Costa Rica and a contract under Costa Rican law | An operation with a declared structure in Brazil |
Where the nickname comes from
No company is called Pocket Broker. The term was born in conversation in Portuguese, where "broker" became an informal synonym for corretora, and took on a life of its own in searches. The full distinction between the two names is on the page about Pocket Broker and Pocket Option; here it is enough to know that there is only one product.
Who this kind of product tends to suit
The natural profile is someone who wants to understand price behaviour over short windows, accepts small amounts and treats the exercise as expensive study rather than a source of income. The entry barrier really is low: the Public Offer cites 0.1 dollars as the minimum deposit and the homepage presents 5 dollars as the smallest deposit allowed — different numbers from the same house, which already shows that any figure should be checked at the source before it counts as a basis for a decision.
And the opposite profile is easy to describe too: anyone looking for an intermediary supervised by a Brazilian regulator, with a local route of appeal, will not find that here. That part appears spelled out further on.
A platform for fixed-time contracts and CFDs on more than 100 assets, active since 2017, operated out of Costa Rica and known in Brazil by a nickname it never used itself.
How trading works
The mechanism has four variables: asset, amount, expiry time and direction. At the end of the period, the price at that moment is compared with the entry price, and the contract settles immediately.
This is the part that confuses people arriving from traditional equities. There is no partially filled order, no position carried for weeks, no dividend. There is a contract that is born and dies within a chosen interval.
The four decisions in each contract
- The asset. A currency pair, a cryptocurrency, a share, a commodity or an index, within the catalogue the platform advertises as more than 100 options.
- The amount. The sum placed in that specific contract. It is that amount, and only it, that is exposed in the trade.
- The expiry. The time at which the contract closes. Short periods react to market noise; longer periods depend more on actual movement.
- The direction. Up or down relative to the price recorded at entry.
When the contract expires, the platform compares the price at that instant with the entry price. If the contracted direction matches the movement observed, the contract settles with a return; if it does not match, the amount placed is lost. There is no middle ground and no partial refund in the fixed-time format.
About the advertised return
Each contract shows a percentage return before confirmation, and that percentage varies by asset, by time of day and by market condition. This guide does not publish payout numbers: they change, they depend on context and they exist in no contractual document as a promise. Any page advertising a fixed percentage return as though it were a permanent feature of the platform is describing a screen, not a rule.
It is worth stating the obvious once: an advertised return per contract is not an expectation of gain over time. Those are two different measures, and confusing them is the most expensive mistake in the category.
The asset catalogue
| Family | What usually weighs on the price | Practical note |
|---|---|---|
| Forex | Interest rates, macroeconomic indicators, market sessions | Opening hours of financial centres concentrate movement |
| Cryptocurrencies | Flows, news, weekend liquidity | They trade outside traditional business hours |
| Shares | Earnings, corporate news, the mood of the index | They depend on the hours of their home exchange |
| Commodities | Supply, demand, weather, geopolitics | Movements can be abrupt and hard to predict |
| Indices | The reference market as a whole | They tend to smooth the noise of a single stock |
A large catalogue sounds like an advantage and, in practice, works better as a trap of dispersion. Nobody follows 100 assets. The useful reading of the number is a different one: there is enough on offer to pick a handful of markets you can understand and ignore the rest.
Where the contract happens
The same mechanics run on every surface. The platform's homepage publishes, besides Google Play, a direct APK download, a browser app and a Telegram bot. How the trading screen works is set out on the page about how to trade, and the behaviour of the app on the page about the Android and iOS app.
Asset, amount, period and direction go in; at expiry, the final price decides. The amount placed is what is at stake in each contract, and the return percentage shown is a screen condition, not a guarantee.
Account and first steps
The account structure is simple: a single sign-up covers browser and app, there is a free demo environment, and identity verification is required by the terms before money goes out.
It is worth describing how access is organised, because almost every operational doubt starts from a wrong expectation about that structure.
One sign-up, every screen
There are no accounts separated by device, by country or by popular name. The same email and password pair opens the browser version and the app, and the history follows the account, not the handset. The page about login describes what appears on each screen and what the platform asks for when it recognises a new device.
The demo environment
There is the demo account, free and funded with virtual money. The app's official listing describes it as rechargeable, meaning the virtual balance can be topped up when it runs out. No official page publishes the opening balance as a figure, so any specific amount you come across comes from third parties, not from the source.
The strength of the demo is that it reproduces the mechanics without reproducing the consequence — which is excellent for learning the screens and terrible for measuring behaviour under pressure. Someone who trades comfortably in the virtual environment and freezes in the real one has not discovered a defect in the platform; they have discovered something about themselves.
What the documents say about money and identity
- Entry: the Public Offer cites a 0.1-dollar minimum deposit; the homepage presents 5 dollars as the smallest deposit allowed.
- Minimum withdrawal: 10 dollars, according to the Public Offer.
- Currency: the payout happens in the same currency as the corresponding deposit, according to the Payment Policy.
- Commissions: the platform advertises 0% on deposits and withdrawals and marks every listed method as "Commission: 0%", while noting that fees and commissions are set by the company and can change at its sole discretion, besides any charges from the payment provider.
- Verification: the Public Offer requires scanned copies of an identity document and proof of actual residence; the Payment Policy asks for a photo or scan of the document, a full copy of every page and allows it to require invoices, bank confirmation or an image of the card. The period is 10 business days from the request, extendable to 30 business days.
Notice the chain: the matched-currency rule and identity verification together explain most of the complaints about stalled withdrawals. It is not a hidden surprise — it is written down, but hardly anyone reads it beforehand. The detail is on the account verification page.
The payment rails
The platform's global methods catalogue lists Pix, Visa, Mastercard, Bitcoin, Ethereum and Tether. One caveat matters more than the list: that page is a worldwide, unfiltered catalogue with more than 170 options, and neither "Brasil" nor "BRL" nor "Boleto" appears on it. Pix being listed is not the same as Pix being available to someone signing up from Brazil, and it could not be confirmed whether it is.
A single sign-up, a free rechargeable demo, low entry, a 10-dollar minimum withdrawal, a payout in the currency of the deposit and identity verification documented in the terms with a window of 10 to 30 business days.
Risks you should know
The central risk is not subtle: in fixed-time contracts, the amount placed is lost when the expiry goes the other way. Volatility and the trader's own emotion amplify that.
This section is short on purpose. A risk explained clearly is worth more than a warning repeated in capital letters.
Loss of the amount invested
Fixed-time contracts and CFDs can consume in full the amount invested in each trade. There is no stop that returns part of the contract in the fixed-time format: expiry arrives, the price is compared and the result is binary. Add up many small contracts and the account disappears as fast as it would in one large trade — only with less awareness of what is happening.
Volatility and timing
Markets do not move uniformly through the day. An indicator release, a market opening and unexpected news produce swings that make any short-period reading far less reliable than the chart suggested a minute earlier. In cryptocurrencies, which also trade at weekends, that behaviour respects no business hours.
The emotional part
- Immediate recovery. Doubling the amount right after a loss is the most predictable and most destructive decision in the category.
- A good run. Several favourable results in a row convince anyone that there was a method where there was luck.
- A period chosen out of anxiety. Very short expiries get chosen because waiting is uncomfortable, not because the market reading called for them.
- Money that will be missed. An amount that compromises the month turns every contract into a worse decision than it needed to be.
The contextual risk, specific to Brazil
There is a risk that comes not from the market but from the position of the product here, and it fits in two sentences. The platform itself states, on the homepage, on the About Us page and on the payment-methods page, that it does not provide service to residents of Brazil, a country that appears in the list alongside the European Economic Area, the United States, Israel, the United Kingdom, the Philippines and Japan. The CVM, for its part, published an alert on 4 October 2021 recording that Pro Trade LTD, Pocket Option and Gembell Limited had no authorisation from the body to take on clients and, through Ato Declaratório CVM 19.121, of 28 September 2021, ordered the immediate suspension of any public offering to investors resident in Brazil; it could not be confirmed whether that act remains in force in 2026.
Two readings that do not hold up: none of this makes the platform "regulated" and none of it makes it a "scam". No regulator is named on the official site, the contract runs under the law of Costa Rica and disputes land in the courts there. The full picture is on regulation.
The amount in each contract can be lost in full, volatility shortens the reach of any reading, and the Brazilian context adds the exclusion declared by the operator and the absence of CVM authorisation.
Starting sensibly
Getting to know the product sensibly means three things: using the virtual environment before any real money, studying a single asset thoroughly and recording what happens in each contract.
If curiosity survives all of the above, it deserves a method. The three practices below promise no result; they merely separate someone who is learning from someone who is betting with a nice screen in front of them.
The virtual environment first
The demo exists exactly for this stage: understanding where the controls are, how expiry behaves, what changes between a one-minute period and a fifteen-minute one. Two weeks of virtual use teach more about the mechanics than any text, this one included. And since the balance is rechargeable, getting it wrong there costs nothing but time.
One asset, not a hundred
Choosing a single market and following it for a few weeks produces a kind of knowledge that dispersion never produces: you start to recognise the hours, the rhythms and the reactions to news. A catalogue of 100 assets is an offer, not an itinerary. Anyone trying to trade everything ends up trading whichever chart happened to be open.
A written record
| What to note | Why it matters |
|---|---|
| Asset, time of day and expiry period | Reveals which windows your readings work in and which they do not |
| The reason for entering, in one line | Separates a decision from an impulse when you reread it days later |
| The result of the contract | Replaces memory, which keeps the wins and erases the rest |
| Your emotional state at the time | Shows the pattern that no chart strategy corrects |
A record of thirty lines usually says, with no room for self-deception, whether there is any consistency there. Most of the time it says there is not — and that answer is cheap while the money was still virtual.
Where to carry on
For the next step, the demo account page describes the virtual environment in detail and the Pocket Broker Brazil guide organises the other pages by task. If the doubt is about trust rather than mechanics, start with the text on whether the platform is trustworthy. The official pages behind the data cited here can be read directly at the platform's official pages.
All the information, platform data and regulatory statements on this page were checked in September 2026 against Pocket Option's own site and against the CVM alert published in 2021; both the platform's terms and a regulator's position can change at any moment.
Virtual before real, one asset instead of a hundred and a written record of every contract. It is the cheapest method for finding out whether this product makes sense for you — and the answer usually shows up fast.
Frequently asked questions
What is Pocket Broker, then?
It is the Brazilian nickname for Pocket Option, a platform for short-term contracts on financial assets, active since 2017 and with a declared address in Costa Rica. No company is registered under the name Pocket Broker: there is one product, with one site, one official app and one sign-up.
How does a fixed-time contract work?
You set the asset, the amount, the expiry period and the direction. At the instant of expiry, the price at that moment is compared with the entry price: if the contracted direction matches the movement, the contract settles with a return; if not, the amount placed is lost. The contract closes by itself, with no possibility of waiting longer.
Which assets are available?
The platform advertises more than 100 global assets and names five families: forex, cryptocurrencies, shares, commodities and indices. The size of the catalogue is an offer, not an itinerary — following a handful of markets you understand usually yields more learning than moving through all of them.
Is there a free demo account?
Yes. The official Android app listing describes a demo account with virtual money and a rechargeable balance. No official page publishes the opening amount as a figure, so any specific number found in third-party content does not come from the source.
Can you lose more than the amount placed in a contract?
In the fixed-time format, what is at stake is the amount of that specific contract, which can be consumed in full when the expiry goes the other way. The practical risk rarely comes from one large contract: it comes from the sum of many small contracts made one after another.
Does the platform serve Brazil?
Pocket Option itself states, on the homepage, on About Us and on the payment-methods page, that it does not provide service to residents of Brazil. Besides that, in 2021 the CVM published an alert about the absence of authorisation and an act ordering the suspension of public offering to residents of the country, whose current force could not be confirmed.
